The Kansas Motor Speedway: a brief history
The International Speedway Corporation began exploring the idea of building a race track in the midwest in 1996. The choice came down to two locations: The Missouri side of Kansas City, and the Kansas side of Kansas City.
Eventually, the Kansas side of the city was chosen, and the Kansas Motor Speedway was born.
The first race ever held at the Speedway was in 2001, and its current major events are:
- The AdventHealth 400
- Hollywood Casino 400
- Kansas Lottery 300
- WISE Power 200
- Speediatrics 150
The speedway remained relatively untouched until 2011, when the speedway announced it would change up the course following the 2012 STP 400. The degree of each turns bank was increased by a few degrees, the grass on the inside of the backstretch was paved over, and new grass on the front stretch was rolled up.
